Marine Layer was founded in San Francisco in 2009 by Mike Natenshon, who started the brand because he found a vintage T-shirt fabric that was softer than anything he could find in current production and then spent several years developing a proprietary fabric that would produce the same softness consistently. The result was what the brand calls the Signature Fabric: a blend of recycled beechwood pulp (called micro modal) and recycled cotton that produces a texture described by the brand and its customers as the softest clothing you can own. The Signature Fabric is the functional premise of the brand. Beechwood modal has the property of feeling softer than standard cotton fibers due to the longer and smoother fiber length that the process of producing fabric from wood pulp creates. The recycled version maintains this property while reducing the environmental footprint of the production. The fabric drapes differently than cotton, with a slight weight and fluidity that cotton fabrics in comparable T-shirt weights do not produce. The Re-Spun program, through which customers can send back any Marine Layer garment in any condition for recycling into new Signature Fabric, is the brand’s circular production commitment made concrete. The Georgetown store will take in old Marine Layer items for the program at the point of purchase of a new item.
