Baked & Wired

The shop at 1052 Thomas Jefferson Street NW sits a half block from the C and O Canal towpath, in a building that has the informal character of a place that decided to stay exactly what it was regardless of what Georgetown became around it. Baked and Wired opened as a cupcake and coffee shop and has remained one, without a rebrand or a pivot or a franchise expansion. The cupcakes are large, made with real butter, and available in a rotating selection of flavors. The coffee is good. The room is small and not particularly styled. Those facts constitute the entire pitch.

Teresa Sullivan, who goes by Tree, started Baked and Wired in 2005 in the Thomas Jefferson Street space. The canal location is not incidental. The neighborhood on and around the towpath has a character that is distinct from the M Street and Wisconsin Avenue commercial corridors: quieter, more residential, less driven by tourist traffic. The shop benefits from the foot traffic of canal walkers, kayakers renting from the boathouse a few doors down, and Georgetown University students who know about the cupcakes through the institutional knowledge that gets transmitted between incoming classes.

The cupcake format here is not the jewel-box miniature that became the dominant version of the genre in the mid-2000s. Baked and Wired cupcakes are full-sized, with high frosting and a generous cake base. The flavor selection rotates seasonally and includes combinations that reflect some genuine kitchen curiosity: chai, brown butter, Earl Grey, seasonal fruit, and a core of classic options that have been on the board long enough to be considered house standards. Whole cakes and other baked goods fill out the display case. The coffee program is serious enough that the espresso drinks are worth ordering on their own, not just as an accompaniment.

The Thomas Jefferson Street block has shifted around the shop over the years. A boathouse that rents kayaks and canoes operates next door. The canal is a short walk from the front door. Georgetown Waterfront Park is a few minutes further along the towpath. All of which makes Baked and Wired a natural stop for people already in that part of Georgetown rather than a destination that requires a specific trip.

Hours run from 7am on weekdays and 8am on weekends, with the shop closing between 7 and 8pm depending on the day. No reservations, no table service. You order at the counter, find a seat if one is available, and get what you came for. The Thomas Jefferson Street block has a pace that is slower than M Street, which is one of its virtues. The Georgetown Waterfront Park is at the end of the block, and in the spring and summer the combination of canal, park, and cupcake-and-coffee stop creates a natural walking circuit for visitors who arrive in the neighborhood from the waterfront rather than from M Street. Tree Sullivan, the owner, has been in the Thomas Jefferson Street space long enough that the shop has become part of the physical description of lower Georgetown in a way that newer businesses cannot manufacture. It is simply there, and has been for long enough that the neighborhood is hard to imagine without it.
